The stories connected to the story

Great unpublished history!

Bill Cheall fought at Dunkirk, North Africa and Sicily, was in the first wave on Gold Beach on D-Day, and finally went to Germany. Since Bill's WW2 memoirs were published, many former comrades and families have come forward with stories and diaries of their own, all forming part of the jigsaw of Bill's war. The aim of these podcasts is to bring the memories to life and honour the soldiers, airmen and seamen who were connected to Bill in some way.

Wanted: Jack Betley - Killed in Sicily 1943

Extract from Dad's Diary - Sicily 1943
"The best possible use was made of the position we found ourselves in and forward patrols were sent out probing the enemy and we achieved a modicum of sleep. Next morning, we progressed up the eastern side of the island to make an attack on Sortino and during our advance we encountered stiff opposition at certain strong points and a number of our men were killed, among them Sergeant Harrington and John Ryan.
My pal, Charlie Lee, was missing. Jack Ramsden and all his section were blown to pieces. Jack Betley was also killed."
Do you know more about Lance Corporal Jack Betley? 5th East Yorks Regiment - Buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily - Aged 20, from Halifax, killed by machine gun fire, 14 July 1943.
